To figure out what Medicine Balls to
Purchase, you need to decide what you are going to do with them.
Squatting, Pulling and Pressing: You will need
Medicine Balls that are heavy enough to tax you or your clients between 1 rep
and 12 reps to Build Strength. Heavy Non-Bouncing Medicine Balls are good for
these movements.
Usually 20% to
+100% of Body Weight are good numbers to start with. You should get these Medicine
Balls in 20-25 lb. increments.
Throwing Drills: You should begin throwing exercises with lighter Medicine
Balls. Often times these balls have an air inflation hole. We generally deflate
these balls slightly to slow down the rebound off of the wall. Also, this makes
the Medicine Ball softer when receiving a throw. Lighter Bouncing Medicine
Balls are good for throws.
Usually 2% and up to
+50% of Body Weight are good numbers to start with. You should get these
Medicine Balls in 2-5 lb. increments, beginning with 2 lb or 4 lb.
Rotational Training: Because rotational training is new to most people, but the
forces can be great, you should begin rotational exercises with lighter
Medicine Balls.
Usually 2% and up
to +40% of Body Weight are good numbers to start with. You should get these
Medicine Balls in 2-5 lb. increments, beginning with 4 lb or 6 lb.
How to Prevent
Injury:
Never lock knees or
elbows because it puts too much stress on the joints above and below and can
cause injury.
To prevent risk of
injury, if you are not physically or mentally ready, do not catch a Medicine Ball
when it is thrown to you or when bouncing back to you. Instead, allow the
thrown ball to land on the ground or do a semi-bounce before picking it up.
